Alleged Speeding Car Struck Down Another Resident
At approximately 1:20pm on Monday, July 19, 2010, 9-year-old Jasiyah Gilbert exited the A&A Deli at 349 Waverly (between Lafayette and Greene Avenues) after buying an icy and chips. He said that he was crossing the street, between two parked cars in the middle of the block, when he “felt the wind” from an approaching car. He said he “tried to run back” onto the sidewalk, but it was too late. He was struck in the side, rolled over twice…scraping the side of his head on the pavement. He said that the driver of what he believed to be a black Mercedes got out of his car and identified himself as a doctor. The driver and two other witnesses told him to lay still but he got up and ran to his grandmother’s apartment at 325 Clinton Avenue. A Good Samaritan stopped him on his way and helped him to his grandmother's.
Jasiyah’s grandmother, Ms. Joyce Stancil, said that she was in such shock when she first saw him, she doesn’t remember dialing 911. He was taken to the Kings County Trauma Center, treated, and released with head injuries and a sprained knee. She was told by the hospital to monitor him closely for two days, and return for further checkup on Thursday. Jasiyah said that his head occasional hurts and his right knee hurt when he walks.
Ironically, Jasiyah lives on the block of Ms. Aileen McKay-Dalton’s crash a couple weeks ago. He actually witnessed the aftermath of that deadly accident.
Ms. Stancil was told by the police department that they could not give her the driver’s name over the phone, but she could pick up a copy of the police report at the 88th Precinct on Thursday.
“I actually delivered him myself in the hospital, and it’s horrible seeing him like this, but I’m happy he’s alive. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” she said. She is now asking for speed bumps on Waverly Avenue.
