Over the past twenty-eight days, overall crime in the confines of the 88th Precinct is down by one crime (108 vs. 109) over the same period in 2009. However, year-to-day crime is up 2.2% (465 vs. 455).
The biggest contributor to the higher year-to-date number is an increase is grand larceny. Grand larceny is up in these four major categories:
- Auto break-ins (value over $1,000)
- Unattended property
- Identity theft
- Stolen credit cards that are used quickly to buy such things as MetroCards
To combat these crimes, police officers are encouraging you to:
- Remove ALL valuables from your car
- Watch your property at all times
- Shred all paperwork that has personal information that can be used to identify you
- Always keep credit card(s) in a safe place
There were two violent shootings in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill last week:
- At approximately 1:45am on June 19, 2010, two men were shot at Fulton Street and Waverly Avenue. One man was hit twice in the face, and the other, a bystander, was hit in the hand. As of last night, no arrest has been made.
- A second shooting occurred at about 8pm, the same day as the above shooting, in the vicinity of Commodore Barry Park at North Elliott Place and Flushing Avenue. A man was shot twice, once in the back and once in the armpit. No arrest has been made, but police do have suspects.
In happier news, the 30 Auxiliary Officers of the 88th Precinct were awarded the Auxiliary Citation for their outstanding volunteer work in 2009. The 88th Precinct team won the annual award given to only one New York City Precinct each year.
