Crossing the street might seem second nature, but oftentimes we forget to follow basic pedestrian safety rules. It takes less than a second lapse in concentration for a tragic accident to occur.
Here are 7 pedestrian safety tips to remember:
- Cross only at marked crosswalks.
- Look all ways before crossing.
- Always obey crosswalk signals; cross only when the signal says “WALK”.
- Pay attention to vehicular traffic. Be sure that it has stopped completely before you start to cross.
- Avoid crossing in the middle of the block, especially from between parked cars.
- If the sidewalk is blocked and it is necessary to walk in the roadway, walk facing traffic so that drivers can see you.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing at night to help drivers see you.
