On Friday, January 13, 2012, Just Because Hair Therapy Salon celebrated five years of excellent service to the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill community. The celebration was filled with delicious food, champagne and other libations, good music and great people.
Owner, and 25-year stylist, Carol Thomas started Just Because Hair Therapy Salon five years ago, after spending close to 20 years working at different salons in Brooklyn and Manhattan. After graduating from beauty school, Carol had her eyes set on skin care, but had to get her start as a part-time manicurist at House of Aquarius Salon on Park Pl ace in Prospect Heights. She then moved over to Salon Strategy on Vanderbilt Avenue, where she spent 15 years, moving from shampooing to a full-time stylist.
After those salons closed, Carol decided to venture off on her own. She transformed 141 Carlton Avenue from a dilapidated storage room into the beautiful space that it is today. “I wanted to create a lifestyle salon where people could come and be comfortable, as if it was their own living room,” she said. Although the salon’s main focus is hair care (weaves and natural hair), Just Because does offer a full range of beauty care, from nails, skin care, retail shampoo and conditioners, to selling t-shirts, pocketbooks and custom-made soaps. Carol and Donna Norris, a stylist at Just Because from the beginning, have held down the shop as the only two stylists over the past year, however, Carol recently hired two new stylists.
In addition to styling Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, Carol feels it is important to give back to the community. For the past three years, Just Because has sponsored the Prom Queen Project, where six local girls are fully dressed (prom dress, after-party dress, shoes, hair and make-up) for their prom. To enter, contestants most first attend a four-week workshop, and then write an easy on what it means to be a prom queen. The Prom Queen project has subsequently won the support of many local groups and politicians.
Just Because Hair Therapy Salon was recently voted one of Uptown Magazine's top beauty shops for not only their skill in grooming and styling, but their "therapy approach" that makes the health of the hair an integral part of the experience.
Next time you are on Myrtle Avenue, stop in at 141 Carlton Avenue and congratulate the entire staff at Just Because for five years of excellent service to the community.
